Holidays in Old Town

Monrovia is the Place to be for the Holiday Season with Special Events and Activities set to Take Place Throughout December 2017!

There are so many different things happening throughout town, including a Holiday Sing Along, Horse-Drawn Wagon Rides, Gift Wrap Stations, caroling, and loads of fun events at the Library!  In an effort to ensure you don’t miss out on the holiday fun, we’ve put together a quick listing of key community events below, and a list of activities is available on the Old Town Holiday Calendar!


Annual Tree Lighting at 6:00 p.m. & Holiday Parade at 7:00 p.m. – This Thursday, December 7, 2017

The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Parade are finally here!  Join us for this special holiday tradition in Old Town that is fun for the whole family! Thursday, December 7

  • 6:00 p.m. – Tree Lighting @ Library Park (321 S. Myrtle Ave)
  • 7:00 p.m. – Holiday Parade traveling north on Myrtle Avenue from Chestnut Avenue to Palm Avenue


Holiday Sing Along Event in Old Town – December 15, 2017

Start warming up those vocal chords for this wonderful holiday sing along event!

  • Friday, December 15
  • 8:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Myrtle Avenue in Old Town


Holiday Home Decorating Contest – Apply by December 11, Judging Takes Place December 18, 2017

The deadline to participate in the very popular annual Holiday Home Decorating Contest is almost here!  Sponsored by the City of Monrovia, residents who decorate their homes for the Holiday Season will have the chance to be recognized by the City in twelve decoration categories, including:

  • Best Still Display – Decorations with no movement
  • Best Outdoor Display – Best overall outdoor decorations
  • Best Window Display – Decorations visible on or through a window that can be seen from the street
  • Most Effective Use of Lighting – Best outdoor lighting display
  • Best Decorated Outdoor Tree – Holiday tree must be in front of the residence
  • Best Neighborhood Effort – Street(s) with many homes decorated in a similar theme
  • Snowman Award – Best display using one or more snowmen
  • Children’s Choice Award – Best display that depicts a youthful theme
  • Santa’s Workshop Award – Best depiction of Santa’s Workshop in decorations
  • Holiday Spirit Award – Most festive display
  • Tim McKeehan “Best of Season” Award – Best overall holiday display in the City

Application and Selection Process:

  • Applications now available for those interested in participating – Due December 11@ 5:00 p.m.
  • Contest judging will take place on Monday, December 18, after 5:00 p.m. - Decorations must be visible from the street
  • Award winners announced on Tuesday, December 19, during the City Council meeting at City Hall – All applicants will be entered in the Holiday Home Decorating Contest Map and winners will receive a yard sign to proudly display!

Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides Set to Take Place in Old Town Monrovia on Thursdays & Sundays in December 2017

To help celebrate this holiday season, horse-drawn carriage rides will be available in Old Town Monrovia on Thursday and Sunday evenings in December!  The carriage rides will be offered on Myrtle Avenue for $5 per person on first-come, first serve basis, and is sponsored by the Monrovia Old Town Advisory Board, Diane Balsamo, and Nikki Felix.  The carriage rides will be offered on the dates listed below:

Santa Tours throughout Monrovia Set for Week of December 18!

SANTA tours

Those wishing to participate should assemble by 5:00 p.m. at the City Hall parking lot (415 S. Ivy Ave) each night the Santa Tour occurs.  Remember that space is limited and participation is on a first come, first served basis.  Parents are reminded that children must be accompanied by an adult.

The tours will last from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and follow the schedule below:

  • Monday, December 18
    • City streets south of Huntington Drive, west of Myrtle Avenue to Fifth Avenue, North of southern City boundaries; includes Valley Circle
  • Tuesday, December 19
    • City streets east of Myrtle Avenue and North of Foothill Boulevard
  • Wednesday, December 20
    • City streets west of Myrtle Avenue, south of Foothill Boulevard to Huntington Drive, between Myrtle Avenue and Fifth Avenue
  • Thursday, December 21
    • City streets east of Myrtle Avenue, south of Foothill Boulevard, north of Duarte Road, from the western to the eastern City boundaries
  • Friday, December 22
    • City streets west of Myrtle Avenue and North of Foothill Boulevard
